Nritya Gurukula

NRITYA GURUKULA DANCE WORKSHOP

Nritya Gurukula

This is a full fledged classical dance workshop in Bharathanatyam, Kathak or Odissi organized as a part of 10th American Natya Festival. Main purpose is the provide an opportunity for young, enthusiastic dance students an opportunity to take Indian classical dance lessons intensively for one week under masters and experienced performers from India and from USA. Students can choose either one or two disciplines to learn. There will be morning and evening sessions.

Why an any dance student should attend this Workshop ?

Soorya Performing Arts normally organizes only dance festival. But, it decided to make a festival fruitful, by giving more education to students of dance - by providing useful dance education and special trainings from eminent artists from India, who attend our dance festival. This way our students and our artists could retain the knowledge apart from enjoying it.

This year we are sponsoring three dance artists - Prajakta Atre (Kathak), Praveen Kumar (Bharathanatyam), SriRadha Paul (Odissi) from India. These are very experienced and highly professional artists and teachers. All of them have performed in reputed places and gained valuable experience. Their experience will be transferred in an intensive one week engagement in this camp.

Many students go insearch such teachers to India - spending thousands of dollars, risking health, staying in some annoying hotels for months to learn directly from these Gurus. Not mentioning, the busy schedules these teachers might have in India, which makes it harder to learn. It will be a better idea to utilize this great opportunity and learn, when they are so close to our door steps. Attending these workshops are very worthy, because it will give insight of a classical dancer directly from India.

We moved our dance festival from April to June, so many students can attend in this Summer break.

What will be taught in the Gurukula ?

Idea of the workshop is to get to learn the tricks of trade. Make dances much better. Also, it is planned to teach at least two dances for each group. Beginners will be learning 2 new dances of 3 - 4 minutes; intermediate and advanced will be focussed on improvement of techniques and also two more dances with bigger duration.  Music will be given to all dances learnt in the workshop, so students can use it to perform in the future.
