Gandhi - The Mahatma - A dance Drama
69 years after the passing away of Mahatma Gandhi, his inspired movements for non-violence, civil rights, and religious tolerance continue to be relevant in this modern age. Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose is pleased to present its production of GANDHI directed and choreographed by Artistic Directors Mythili Kumar and Rasika Kumar at today's festival.
In May 1995 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), Abhinaya Dance Company of San José premiered GANDHI-THE MAHATMA. The acclaimed 1995 production depicted key events in Gandhi’s life that transformed him into a 'Mahatma' (great soul). Today, almost 70 years after his death, his inspired movements for non-violence, civil rights, and religious tolerance still find relevance in this modern age.
Abhinaya presented GANDHI in 2012 and 2013 with new choreography by Mythili Kumar (Artistic Director), and Rasika Kumar (principal dancer and choreographer) to reiterate Gandhi’s message of civil disobedience as an alternative to violent resistance. Through the voice of Manubhen, his grand-niece who reminisces about Gandhi, the dance-theater production presents vivid portrayals of Gandhi’s life, his inspirational encounters, and events that led him to becoming a world figure. Gandhi’s childhood fears, his struggles in South Africa, his civil disobedience movement against the British in India, and his untiring efforts to unify the religious groups in India are powerful scenes portrayed by Abhinaya Dance Company of San José through the classical dance style of Bharatanatyam.
